Chapter 40
**Claire’s POV**
Kai seized the moment and kicked Carl’s leg, sending him crashing to his knees.
Carl’s snarl twisted into something inhuman, his eyes gleaming with a vicious red light as
he roared, “You little runt, I’ll kill you today!”
He lunged at Kai with a feral grace, joined by a group of Betas whose growls filled the humid night air. The sudden onslaught plunged the scene into chaos.
The dark forest surrounding us became alive with danger. Shadows darted between the trees, and every snapping twig or rustling leaf felt like another enemy closing in. Kai and I scrambled onto the roof of our car, seeking temporary refuge.
“Claire, stay behind me!” Kai barked, his voice sharp with both fury and fear. He used his claws with a practiced ferocity, fiercely kicking away the Betas attempting to climb up.
But our defense didn’t last long. One Beta leaped with inhuman strength, dragging me down by the ankle. My back hit the ground hard, knocking the breath from my lungs. I clawed at the dirt, struggling to escape the iron grip holding me down.
Kai roared, his claws raking across the Beta’s arm to free me, but another wolf tackled him from the side. The momentum sent him sprawling, his glasses skidding across the gravel.
My vision blurred with rage as I yanked out my gun and fired. The crack of the gunshot echoed through the forest. Beside me, Kai did the same, his face grim.
“I hate these things,” I muttered, my hands trembling. The bullets were coated in wolfsbane, a deadly poison to werewolves, and each shot felt like a betrayal of our principles as
healers.
But to my shock, the wolves barely flinched. The bullets embedded in their grotesquely muscular bodies, but they kept moving, sneering as if our weapons were toys.

“They’re enhanced,” Kai hissed, his voice tight. “This isn’t just the plague drugs. They’ve created something worse.”
The thought made my stomach churn. My hands tightened on the gun, but it was wrenched away before I could fire again.
Carl loomed over Kai, his expression dark with triumph. With a brutal kick, he sent Kai flying backward. Kai landed hard, a sickening crack of metal underfoot as his glasses shattered.
“Kai!” I screamed, rushing to his side. His lip was split, and blood dripped from a cut above his brow, but he pushed me away.
“Stay back, Claire!” He growled, standing protectively in front of me.
The female wolf from earlier appeared again, her cruel, weathered face illuminated by the faint moonlight filtering through the trees. Her lips curled Into a sneer as she took in the
scene.
“Stop them!” I shouted at her, desperation lacing my voice.
She laughed, a sharp, grating sound that made my skin crawl. “Bitch,” she snarled, “kill
them both!”
Kai’s fury boiled over. “We’re Halix charity doctors!” He yelled. “Do you want the wrath of the Nightwish and Laken packs coming down on your heads?”
The female wolf froze for a split second, her eyes narrowing. But then a wicked smile spread across her face. “Doctors?” She mocked. “Let’s see how good your ch❞rity is when
you’re in pieces.”
I sighed, dread tightening my chest. If these Betas were truly enhanced by illegal drugs, our titles wouldn’t save us. In fact, it might make them hate us even more.
Leaning against the car, I gasped for air, my mind racing for a way to stall them. “Zoe… I whispered through the mindlink, trying to connect. Static buzzed in my head, and I pushed harder, shouting her name.

Before I could get a response, a blood–soaked claw slashed at my face. I dodged, but not fast enough. Pain flared as the claw left a deep gash on my cheek, warm blood trickling down my skin.
The female wolf grinned, her teeth bared, blood and saliva dripping from her fangs. With a feral growl, she grabbed me by the arm and slammed me into the ground.
The impact rattled my bones, but adrenaline surged through me. I clawed at her chest with all the strength I could muster, my nails barely scratching her thick, muscled skin.
“Fuck you! Fuck you!” I spat, twisting free through a gap in her grip. My fingers found the hilt of a knife, and I drove it into her ribs with all my might.
The blade sank in slowly, her muscles as hard as steel. But it was enough. The Silverclaw Vine toxin coating the knife took effect immediately, and she staggered back with a howl of
agony.
Her body convulsed, reverting to her human form as she collapsed to the ground, groaning
in pain.
The other wolves saw my attack as an act of defiance. Their furious howls echoed through the forest, shaking the air around us.
“You filthy bitch!” One snarled, his voice trembling with rage. “What else do you have? Just that little knife? Let’s see how you’ll fight now!”
A massive, blackened claw came slashing down toward me.
“Claire!”
Kai threw himself in front of me, his body shielding mine as the claw struck him instead. He gasped in pain but refused to let me go.
We retreated step by step, the wolves closing in like a tide of death. Behind us, the dense wall of vines blocked any escape.
“Kai, what do we do?” I whispered, my voice shaking.
Chapter 49
His jaw tightened, his eyes scanning the circle of predators. “We fight,” he said simply.
The struggle had drawn attention. From the shadows of the forest, more werewolves
emerged, their eyes glowing like cold embers. Some watched with indifference, others with
predatory amusement.
Carl stepped forward, his presence commanding the scene. He smiled, a chilling curve to his lips that made my blood run cold.
“Any who dare invade the forest,” he said, his tone almost cheerful, “will be torn apart, skinned, and their corpses thrown into the valley to feed the hawks and vultures.”
His words hung heavy in the air. My knees trembled, but I refused to let fear consume me.
Carl’s gaze locked onto mine, his smile widening. “So… are you ready?”
The forest fell silent, save for the distant rustling of leaves and the steady pounding of my
heart.
“Not yet,” I thought to say, but it was… too late. Was it?
