Chapter 749 Different Voice
“Chandler, I feel terrible,” Dante lamented into the phone. “Why is Anne treating me like this? What did I do to deserve this?
“I turned Lola into the police myself–wasn’t that enough? She accepted both Yancey and Max, but why won’t she give me another chance?”
Chandler was exhausted from his trip and in no mood to deal with Dante’s relationship problems.
He fell silent for a moment before responding, “You’re indeed a jerk. You had three years of marriage and countless opportunities to win her heart, yet you chose to ignore her instead.
“Nobody waits in the same place forever. When you finally turned around, the one who had waited for you was already
gone.”
His words were gentle but clear; Dante had brought this on himself.
Dante took another swig of wine. People said alcohol could drown your sorrows, but why did each drink only seem to deepen his depression?
“What about our daughter?” he pressed. “Fine, she doesn’t want me, but to reject Bella? I brought her to Havenbrook, and Anne

Chandler sighed. Anne had seen right through Dante’s attempt to use Bella to manipulate her emotions, which was precisely why she was keeping her distance.
When Max woke up, he instinctively reached for Anne’s side of the bed, finding it empty. He opened his eyes to confirm what he already knew she was gone.
Last night had been his first time with a woman. Everything was a blur of sensation and emotion, ending only when
Anne, exhausted, had murmured, “Let’s sleep.” He’d finished immediately.
Recalling Anne’s expression, he surmised that she was pleased with him.
Half asleep in the middle of the night, he instinctively pulled Anne into his arms. To his surprise, when he woke up, she was
gone.
It’s only seven in the morning. Did she really leave this early?
Maybe because she wasn’t used to sharing her bed with someone, Anne got up very early.
She was still processing the sight of Max in her pink sheets. Her cheeks flushed as memories of the previous night flooded back.

After a year of celibacy, she’d ended up in bed with her old classmate.

She blamed the wine. But she had to admit Max had taken the initiative, and she had just lost control.
As she descended the stairs, Anne nearly stepped on broken beer bottle shards.
Glancing toward the corner with a frown, she spotted Dante curled up like a homeless person, passed out in broad daylight.
Despite Havenbrook’s generally warm climate, the nights could be cool. He must have spent the entire night there.
Anne approached Dante and called his assistant. “Jaxon, I’m sending you the address. Come get Dante.”
Dante hadn’t come to Havenbrook alone. He’d brought an entourage of nannies, servants, and his assistant along with Bella.
Jaxon’s voice was thick with sleep. “Anne, Mr. Paltrow is—”
“Listen, Jaxon,” Anne cut him off. “You’ve worked for Dante for years. Please convince him to leave Havenbrook. We’re never getting back together.”
Jaxon fell silent.
“There are plenty of women in the world. He has options,” Anne added.

Suddenly, Dante’s eyes snapped open. “There may be other women, but there’s only one Anne.”

His gaze was unfocused, and his words were slurred with wine. “Come back to me, Anne. I can pretend none of this happened.”
Suddenly, he spotted the hickeys on her neck, and something in him snapped.
He lurched to his feet, backing her into a corner. “You slept with him last night? How could you betray me like this?” His eyes were bloodshot with hurt and anger.
Anne’s back hit the cold wall, and pain flashed across her face. She didn’t resist as his fingers dug into her neck, just staring at him with the detached look one might give a stranger.
“We’ve been divorced for over a year. How is this betrayal? Am I not allowed to move on?” she asked coldly.
Her words cut deep. Dante’s eyes burned.
“Planning to strangle me?” Anne sneered.
Dante released her, staring at his hand and shaking his head vigorously. “No. How could I ever hurt you? Anne, you know I care about you.
“Let me take whatever punishment I deserve, but please, come back to me. We can go back to how things were. I promise I’ll be better.”

“Back to how things were? When you constantly ignored me?” Anne’s voice was ice.
A man’s promises meant nothing. She fixed him with a cold, distant stare. “Dante, we can’t go back.” With that, she walked

Dante watched her leave, dropping to one knee in misery.
We can’t go back? No, there must be a chance. There has to be.

The morning dawned bright and clear, and Meryl had slept well despite everything.
She’d been too dizzy with a fever yesterday to risk breastfeeding her son.
Though her temperature had seemed better before bed, it had spiked again overnight. Thankfully, the baby had slept peacefully through it all.
She desperately needed to find a reliable nanny–she could barely find time to eat at this rate.
As she got up, an odd noise from outside caught her attention.
Her expression turned serious. Could there be an intruder? The thought made her uneasy.

While the neighborhood was generally safe, break–ins weren’t impossible.
The more she considered the possibilities, the more worried she became.
Meryl crept toward the door, planning to peek outside. If things went badly, she reasoned, she could probably escape by jumping from the second floor.
Just then, her son began to cry.
Heart racing, Meryl quickly covered his mouth, terrified of alerting the intruder.
But it was too late–she could hear footsteps approaching.
Backing away with her son in her arms, she frantically scanned the room for anything she could use as a weapon.
Then she realized the footsteps belonged to more than one
person.
A gang? Really? I’ve been in Aetherland for a few days and this is how I die?
