Chapter 750 Call the Police?
Meryl crouched behind the door, her heart pounding.

She could make out two men speaking in hushed tones outside.
Though she couldn’t understand their words, their local accent was unmistakable.
Suddenly, the door burst open.
Acting on instinct, Meryl clutched her son in one arm and hurled the desk lamp at the intruders with her other hand.
The lamp struck one of them, but his partner cursed and lunged forward, easily disarming her.
Both men were heavily tattooed and intimidating in appearance.
Terror gripped Meryl as she tried to flee with her son but they were too quick as they realized her intentions.
One of them grabbed her by the neck and roughly dragged her back, spitting foreign obscenities while her son wailed in her
arms.
This was Meryl’s first encounter with such violence. She couldn’t believe a burglary could happen in broad daylight in what she thought was a safe downtown area.

Desperately, she offered them money. The men sneered and demanded she go to the bank immediately for cash.

To ensure her compliance, they insisted on keeping her child as collateral.
Panic seized Meryl at the thought of leaving her son.
How could she trust these criminals with her baby? What if they took the money and killed him anyway?
But she was powerless to negotiate in her position.
Thinking quickly, Meryl recognized their primary motivation was financial.
She pleaded with them, explaining that her son needed feeding first, and the bank trip would take at least an hour or two.
Perhaps moved by her desperate state, they agreed.
Meryl immediately rushed to the bathroom with her son and locked the door behind her, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
She knew she had only bought herself minutes.
She couldn’t give up, not when both their lives were at stake.
The bathroom window offered a potential escape.
She tried several times. But from the second floor, jumping with an infant was too risky. Cold sweat beaded on her forehead.

Within two minutes, the robbers began pounding on the door, demanding she come out.
When Meryl begged for more time, they lost patience and started trying to break in.
As the door frame splintered under their assault, Meryl clutched her crying son tightly, biting her lip as tears welled in her eyes.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, followed by a heavy thud.
This was Aetherland, where firearms were legal.
Meryl’s heart nearly stopped. Through the gap under the door, she glimpsed blood seeping across the floor.
Whose blood was that? Who else was here?
Meryl was paralyzed with fear, her legs shaking so badly she could barely stand.
She retreated to the bathtub with her son, scarcely daring to breathe.
The commotion outside eventually died down, replaced by footsteps approaching the bathroom.
Each step felt like death drawing nearer.
Only now did Meryl realize how naive she’d been. Surviving abroad alone with a newborn was far more challenging than

she’d imagined. She had drastically overestimated the safety of foreign countries.
Chandler’s face suddenly flashed through her mind.
If he learned that she and their son had died in a foreign land, would he mourn them? Would he even know they were gone?
Tears fell silently onto her baby’s blanket. The infant gazed up at her with innocent eyes, unaware of their peril.
Meryl gently stroked his cheek. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I tried my best. You’ve barely begun your life, and now-”
“Sweetie, are you in there?” A familiar voice called out. It was Felix, and his tone was soothing and gentle.
Meryl stared at the door in disbelief. “Felix?”
“It’s me! You’re safe now. Open up.”
Meryl immediately stood up and opened the bathroom door.
Felix stood there, studying her face. “What’s this? Did you miss me so much you’re crying?” he teased.
Meryl’s eyes were red and swollen.
All her fear and relief crashed over her at once, and she burst into fresh tears.
Meryl finally felt relieved when she saw a familiar face.

Putting aside the teasing in his words, Meryl wailed.

At her feet lay one of the intruders, shot through the head, blood pooling on the floor.
Whether from her narrow escape or the shocking violence, Meryl broke down completely.
Felix sighed and squeezed her shoulder gently.
Usually awkward at offering comfort, he seemed at a loss when faced with her tears.
She cried so hard; she seemed genuinely scared.
He gently wiped her cheeks as a mischievous smile played on his lips.
Worried she might hyperventilate, he leaned close to her ear and whispered playfully, “Sweetie, you’re a mother now. Be stable. If you don’t stop crying, I’ll have to kiss you.”
Meryl’s tears stopped instantly, though one still trembled on her lashes, making her look fragile.
Felix’s heart skipped a beat, and his Adam’s apple bobbed.
Why did you stop? Keep crying.
Philip burst in at that moment. “Mr. Powell, the other one escaped by car! He knows the area too well, and our men

Being foreigners in unfamiliar territory had put them at a disadvantage against a local criminal.

Felix nodded, glancing at the dead man with cold detachment. “Dispose of the body. Leave no trace.”
He gestured for Meryl to follow him. “It’s not safe here. Come with me.”
Meryl stared in horror at the corpse.
Minutes ago, he had been alive. Had Felix really killed him so casually?
Her eyes darted to Felix’s hands.
She’d heard rumors that the Powell family’s business dealings were shady, that Felix had killed many people.
She hadn’t believed it before, but seeing his indifference to taking a life made those rumors suddenly seem very real.
“Shouldn’t we call the police?” she asked softly.
