Chandler hurried to defend himself. “That’s not how it is at all!”
Before he could finish, tears streamed down Meryl’s face. Not
wanting to cry in front of him, she stood up and walked out of the restaurant.
Chandler thought she was too upset to forgive him and was leaving for good.
He immediately followed.
Meryl waited by the roadside, hoping to flag down a cab, but after several minutes, not even a single car passed by.
She pouted in frustration but noticed Chandler standing silently
behind her.
Their eyes met. Meryl’s lashes trembled, and it felt as if the stillness in her heart rippled like a breeze across calm waters.
A light drizzle began to fall. Without hesitation, Chandler pulled Meryl into his arms, holding her tightly.
He leaned forward, using his body as a shield to keep her dry.
Feeling his protective gesture, Meryl raised her hand and lightly
hit his chest.
Chandler caught her wrist, pressing her hand to his heart.

The faint woody scent she always associated with Chandler wrapped around her, filling her with a sense of safety.
Her frustration began to subside.

“Why,” she thought, “does this man have to be so gentle? It’s like he won’t even let me be angry without feeling guilty about it.”
Meryl wasn’t really mad anymore. She was just conflicted.
She had spent the entire evening locked in the cold, dark music hall, hungry and alone, only to see her husband arrive with another woman. And worse, he mentioned it was Rachel’s birthday.
The rain began falling harder. Chandler gently placed a hand on the back of Meryl’s head and guided her under a nearby awning.
“You’ve got a driver right here, yet you’re trying to hail a cab? Meryl, are you saying you don’t trust my driving?”
Meryl lowered her head. “It’s not that I don’t trust your driving. I’m just jealous. Jealous of you and Rachel.”
Her candid response caught Chandler off guard, but he smiled warmly.
He brushed a strand of damp hair from her face and said softly, “If you’re jealous, it means you care about me. That makes me happy.”
Meryl blinked and rolled her eyes. “Who gets happy about making someone jealous? What’s wrong with you? Maybe I should just stay upset forever!”

She stomped on his foot and pushed herself out of his embrace.
Chandler grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
He leaned in closer, his voice gentle but firm. “It’s my fault for upsetting you. I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”
He held her gaze, his eyes sincere. “I was waiting for you outside the music hall, but your phone was off. Then Rachel showed up and said it was her birthday.
“I wasn’t planning to bring her. It is a date with my wife, so why would I let anyone else tag along? But since I couldn’t reach you, I thought she might help me figure out where you were.”
Chandler’s steady gaze reflected nothing but Meryl’s image.
He cupped her face with both hands and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.
“Meryl, the only one I’ve ever loved is you.”
The rain poured harder, soaking the streets. Reflections of neon lights shimmered on the wet ground.
In Chandler’s deep eyes, Meryl saw the glow of the city and her own surprised expression.
