Twenty minutes after hanging up, guessing Chandler would arrive soon, Meryl tiptoed downstairs to open the door.
The moment she cracked the door open, she found herself wrapped in Chandler’s embrace.
Chandler was breathing heavily. Clearly, he’d sprinted all the way from his car.
Holding her tight, he murmured apologetically, “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
She hadn’t waited long at all.

What was usually a thirty–minute drive had taken Chandler just twenty minutes.
Worried about the cold, Chandler ushered Meryl upstairs as soon as they got inside.
Once in the bedroom, he pulled out a carefully wrapped sandwich from his coat.
“It’s late, and most places were closed. Try this. If you don’t like
it, I can whip something up in the kitchen.”
The sandwich was still warm, fresh off the grill.

Chandler sat on the edge of the bed, watching as she took one bite after another.

“Has the baby been behaving?” His gaze fell to her belly, which had begun showing more prominently in recent weeks.
Being naturally slim and with the cooler weather requiring jackets when out, her pregnancy wasn’t apparent to others yet.
But now, wearing only a thin nightgown, her baby bump was clearly visible.
Chandler pressed his ear against her belly.
“I read that in late pregnancy when the baby gets active, it can cause pubic bone discomfort and keep you up all night,” he said.
Chandler listened intently.
As if sensing attention, the baby created a small bump in her belly.
“Is that… the baby moving?” Chandler’s hand gently touched Meryl’s stomach as he pressed against it, warning in a low voice, “Behave yourself in there. Don’t give my wife a hard time.”
Meryl couldn’t help but smile.
No sooner had she finished her sandwich than Chandler, like a magician, produced a bottle of milk from somewhere.

Meryl took a sip. The temperature was perfect.

Chandler was being so attentive that even her lingering resentment began to fade.
Shortly after, Chandler’s phone started ringing.
At this hour of the night, he didn’t need to guess who was calling.
Chandler hung up, but within two minutes, it rang again.
Meryl lowered her eyes and said softly, “You should go back to be with her.”
“I’ve already contacted specialists. They’ll be here to treat her in the next few days.”
Meryl nodded.
“Once the specialists finish their consultation, I’ll come right back to you.”
Their wedding anniversary was just days away.

He sighed deeply and murmured, “Meryl, I hate being apart from you.”
Chandler’s phone kept ringing as Rachel grew increasingly desperate.
Meryl glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already 2 AM.
Since Chandler wasn’t answering Rachel’s calls, Meryl reached into his pocket, took out his phone, and answered it herself.
Sure enough, Rachel’s voice came through, sweet and pouty, clearly trying to sound cute.

Hearing Meryl flaunting their intimacy over the phone made Rachel’s chest heaving with anger.
She nearly threw her phone against the wall.
But then she thought about it, Meryl was seven months pregnant, already in her third trimester. How could she possibly be fooling around with Chandler at a time like this?
Rachel knew Meryl was deliberately provoking her, so she snapped, “You should be more careful. Wouldn’t want two lives lost instead of one.”
Those words were harsh and carried an unmistakable curse.

“But I need to pee! Who’s going to carry me to the bathroom if Chandler isn’t here?”
Meryl’s breath caught in her throat.
A wave of discomfort washed over her.
So, for the past couple of days, had Chandler been personally helping Rachel to the bathroom?
She bit her lip, unable to speak, the ache in her chest growing
worse.
Chandler cut in. “Isn’t there a nurse taking care of you?”
Rachel whined. “But I don’t know her! I’d be embarrassed!”
Meryl snapped. “Then just hold it!”
With that, Meryl hung up, unable to bear hearing Rachel’s voice any longer.
The good mood from Chandler bringing her late–night snacks earlier had largely evaporated.
