Chapter 32
“Enough, Emily. That’s all in the past,” David said, cutting her off.
During dinner, someone ordered alcohol and tried to pour Ethan a drink. Julia thought his drunkenness last time.
“He can’t drink,” she said.
“Come on, everyone’s drinking. Ethan can’t be
Ethan said to Julia, “It’s fine. A little drink won’t hurt.”
an exception,” the guy said.
“You can’t drink,” Julia frowned.“You felt terrible last time.”
Ethan whispered, “That was because I wanted you to worry about me and stay with me longer.”
Julia froze.“What do you mean?”
Ethan squeezed Julia’s hand.“Nothing. I can drink.” He kissed her cheek. Sorry, I lied. I was jealous. If you don’t want me to drink, I won’t.”
He hated to tell her the truth, but he didn’t want to lie to her, either.“I’m sorry, guys. Julia doesn’t allow me to drink. I’ll just have some juice to toast with you all.”
Everyone understood. But Julia felt upset.
On the way home, Julia sat in the passenger seat, looking unhappy. Ethan knew he’d made a mistake. He was too hasty; he should have waited until their relationship was more solid before telling her the truth. It wasn’t a big deal, but their relationship was fragile. The car stopped outside the dorm. Ethan turned to Julia.“Julia, I’m sorry! I just wanted to see how you’d react if I was drunk.”
He tugged at her sleeve, but she stared out the window. His anxiety grew.“Julia…”
He never meant to lie to her.
They sat in silence for a long time. Julia didn’t turn around. Ethan, desperate, unbuckled his seatbelt and turned her head.
He froze.“Julia, you’re crying?”
Seeing her tears, his heart ached.“Julia, I’m sorry.
I’m so sorry.”
Julia was choked. “You said you wouldn’t lie to me.”
“I was being stupid. Julia, don’t cry. I was wrong. I’ll never lie to you again. Please forgive me.” He hugged her.“I won’t drink again.”
After a long time, Ethan calmed Julia down. He wouldn’t lie again; he’d almost lost her. He drove her back to her dorm, then texted Shaw, “I will never let you take Julia from me.“.
Shaw had just heard that Julia and Ethan were dating when he got this text. Julia was so independent that she would never be with someone she didn’t have feelings for. Therefore, Shaw knew very well that he had officially missed her. In the future, he would be watching Julia from where she couldn’t see him.
He texted back, “Congrats.”
་
He was pretty sure Julia would be happy with Ethan. He was jealous, but he did want them to be happy. Julia deserved that.
