Chapter 103
I lowered the phone, feeling a strange, hollow sensation spread through me.
Mia’s words stung, and yet… I felt almost nothing.
I’d waited years for Ryan to show some level of loyalty, some sign that he valued me.
And now, in this desperate, reckless act, he was trying to prove something that had already lost its
meaning.
Mia’s message beeped through, and I clicked on the video attachment.
The screen lit up with a scene of swirling snow, the image flickering as Ryan’s silhouette appeared. and disappeared in the lake.
Each time he surfaced, gasping for breath, he would dive back down, his movements slowing, his face etched with a fierce determination.
Watching him felt surreal; he looked like a man obsessed, clinging to a shred of hope that he thought could fix things between us.
The moment the video changed, my gaze turned steely, watching as the scene unfolded on the
screen.
There he was Ryan, the same man I had once believed in, his once–vibrant blue eyes dulled and his lips trembling as he rose from an icy lake.
Snow fell softly around him, clinging to his soaked hair and pale face, and his hand held a small, glittering diamond ring.
It was a sight meant to stir pity, a romantic gesture designed to melt any heart.
“Sophia,” he called out, his voice barely audible over the static of the recording. He clutched the ring with shaking fingers, his expression strained and forlorn.
“I found our wedding ring Can we get back together?” The words were as cold as the lake he had dragged himself out of, desperate and pleading-
I sighed, unamused by the spectacle. How could he think that pulling something like this would erase all the hurt he had caused? “You must be getting desperate, Ryan,” I muttered, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “All this to get Moon Shadow’s support do you really think I’d be swayed?”

Ryan’s face twisted, looking back at me with a hint of wounded pride. “Is that how little you think of me, Sophia?” he asked, a tremor of sincerity in his voice. “Do you really believe I’m that kind of
-person?”
Once, those words might have broken me, made me feel guilty for doubting him.
But not anymore. The innocence of that previous Sophia had vanished along with my trust in him. Now, it was all clear. He wanted me back not out of love, but out of need.
He pressed on, his tone almost pleading. “Aren’t you happy at all to hear me say this? Doesn’t any part of you want to… come back?”
Just as I was about to end the call, a voice rang from the other side of the room, pulling me out of my trance. “Sophia, who are you talking to?”
It was Ethan, his warm voice carrying over as he finished setting the table. The smell of dinner drifted through the air, filling the room with a comforting aroma.
“Dinner’s ready,” he added, as he gestured towards the table, where he had prepared a feast
Then, as if on cue, Lirian entered the room, casually strolling over with a mischievous look on his face.
Without a word, he leaned down and pressed a quick, playful kiss to my cheek, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
品
He glanced at the phone in my hand, his eyes glinting with a hint of mischief as he greeted Ryan with a mocking grin. “Honey,” he said, his voice purposely loud enough for Ryan to hear.
The effect was immediate. Ryan’s voice cracked with urgency on the other end of the line. “Who’s with you? Why is there a man’s voice?”
“It’s none of your business, Ryan,” I replied coolly, pulling the phone away from my ear before he could say another word. With a final glance, I hung up, the small satisfaction of ending things on my terms washing over me.
As I set the phone down, the three of us settled around the table. Lirian smirked, pleased with himself for throwing Ryan off, while Ethan just gave me a knowing smile.
We fell into easy conversation, the warmth and laughter at the table so starkly different from the frigid desperation Ryan had tried to bring back into my life.
Fe next morning, I returned to school with a renewed sense of focus.
Chapter 103
Ryan’s antics from the night before were already fading into the background.
However, word traveled fast in our small school, and by midday,
I’d overheard whispers that Ryan hadn’t shown up today – supposedly down with a severe case of windchill. Apparently, his night in the freezing lake hadn’t been without consequences.
A pang of irony struck me, but I shook it off, concentrating on my work.
During my lunch break, I saw a missive, from Clara.
[Sofia, Ryan woke up, he wants to see you, can you come to the hospital?]
