Three months had passed, and Sonya had stopped expecting Henry to reach out. Then, early one morning, he suddenly sent her a message:“Sonya, the sunrise here isn’t beautiful at all.”
Sonya stared at it for a while, completely lost in thought before coming backing to herself, and then quickly called him back.
She made A video call, and to her surprise, he picked up almost right away.
On the screen, Henry looked different. His hair was all messy, his skin much darker, his face thinner, and his beard was scruffy. He didn’t look at her, just stared off into the distance with empty, confused eyes.
The first word that popped into Sonya’s head when she saw him was: hopeless.
He looked like a dead leaf, just lying there, with no life left.
“Henry,” she called.
He didn’t answer, just stared into space.
Sonya called his name again, but he still didn’t answer. She tried to steady her heartbeat, and then she heard the sound of waves crashing through the phone, almost like roar.
“Henry, I want to see the sunrise too. Can you show me?” she asked.
This time, he responded, turning the phone’s camera around. The screen showed the sea, and at the horizon, a golden sun was rising, jumping up from the water.
Sonya quickly took a screenshot and sent it to Jason, asking him to find out where this place was.
“Henry, you know I’m waiting for you at home, right?” she said.
“I’m sorry,” his voice was dry and hoarse.
“I know you’re going through something. We can face it together.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the phone, and Sonya’s heart twisted painfully. Though it was just a few words, she knew Henry wasn’t in a good state, not at all. He was probably on the edge of breaking down.
“Henry!” she said anxiously.
“I don’t know where I am,” said Henry.
“Think carefully.”
“I don’t know where this is. I’m lost. I want to go home, but I can’t find the way back. Sonya, come take me home.”
“Okay, I’ll take you home. Don’t panic, don’t be afraid, wait for me, alright?” Okay.”

After he said that, the line went dead. Sonya called back, but the phone was turned off. She guessed it had run out of battery.
At that moment, Jason called her.
“I found the place. He’s in San Francisco,” said Jason.
Two days later, they boarded a plane to San Francisco.
Once they got off the plane, they headed straight to the beach where Henry had been.
It was an unfamiliar beach, and because it was raining, there wasn’t anyone around. Sonya stood by the rock where Henry had sat, thinking about how he was feeling while watching the sunrise that day.“He must have been lonely,” thought Sonya.
“Sonya, I’ve already asked people here to search for Henry. We should hear something soon,” Jason said.
Sonya nodded.“I want to stay here a little longer.”
“Okay, I’ll stay with you,” said Jason.
The rain got worse, and eventually, they gave up waiting for Henry.
Sitting in the car, Sonya stared at the sea. Under the dark clouds, it was crashing and roaring, like a wild animal ready to devour everything.
She suddenly realized maybe Henry was asking for her help that day.
They searched for Henry in San Francisco for half a month, and Sonya visited the beach every day, but he never showed up. Then, one evening, Jason got some news.
A local friend took them to an old neighborhood, saying someone had seen Henry there.
“This place is rough, especially when you get into this block. I won’t go into all the details, but I’ll say this–if someone insults or hits you here, don’t fight back. If you get stabbed, just run,” their friend said.
The friend spoke in a
roundabout way, but Jason and Sonya got the message. This place was full of all sorts of people and gangs, with frequent fights.
“See that bar up ahead? My people said they saw him going in and out of there,” the friend pointed to a bar in front. It looked like any other bar from the outside–rough, with tacky paintings, a messy environment, and trendy–looking men and women, with loud music blasting from inside.
Sonya stepped on something, looked down, and immediately stepped back in disgust, her eyebrows furrowing tightly.
Jason took a deep breath, turned to Sonya, and said, “Sonya, stay in the car. I’ll go in by myself.”
“I’ll go with you,” Sonya said. Jason was worried about her safety, but she was just as worried about his. After all, this wasn’t New York, and it wasn’t the Reynolds family’s territory.
Jason thought for a second, then nodded and said, “Let’s go in together, just have a quick look. If we don’t see Henry, we’ll leave right away.”
“Okay,” said Sonya.
Their friend stayed outside, saying he was from a different gang, and if he went in, they’d think he was causing trouble.

They got to the bar, and the doorman looked them up and down a few times, then smirked and et them in.
Once inside, the loud music hit them, and they were swept into a world of flashing lights and chaos.
The place was a mess–loud music, dirty decorations, and a wild crowd. They tried to stay unnoticed as they moved through.
The bar had private booths without doors, so they could peek inside each one. While looking around, Jason almost bumped into a drunk guy with a fierce look on his face. When the man seemed ready to get angry, Jason quickly handed him some money, and the man didn’t make a fuss.
The two of them became even more cautious and reached the next booth. As they peeked inside, they saw someone swing a bottle straight at the head of a person kneeling on the floor. There was a loud crack, and shards of glass and blood splattered everywhere.

hit the ground, but he wasn’t finished. He grabbed the broken bottle and shoved it into the guy’s stomach.
Sonya gasped and covered her mouth, shivering in fear.
Jason was shocked too and grabbed Sonya, trying to pull her away.
“Wait, it’s Henry! I see Henry!” Sonya shouted.
The man sitting in the middle of the black sofa, drinking from a bottle of liquor, was Henry. Even though his hair was messy, he had a scruffy beard, and his floral shirt looked out of place, he still stood out in the crowd.
They rushed over, but the people in the booth stopped and stared for a second before laughing. “Who are these kids, wandering into a place like this?” a man asked.
Sonya ignored them and shouted at Henry, “Henry! Henry! It’s me! I came to find you!” She called out several times, but Henry didn’t respond.
Jason, worried, started walking toward him. But before he could get far, a big guy grabbed him and held a knife to his face.
“What the hell, looking for trouble?” the guy shouted.
