Sonya stopped the car at once; an inch forward, and she would have hit Henry.
She was so startled that her scalp went numb, and she took deep breaths. Then she looked at Henry, who seemed terrified while looking at her eagerly. She seriously doubted if he had done it on purpose.
She gripped the steering wheel tightly, pulling herself together. Then she honked the horn forcefully several times. Yet, he still stood in situ, forcing her to get out of the car.
She frowned, her gaze deepening. She refused to give in.
Because of the sudden brake, Calvin’s upper body leaned forward, and his head hit the glove box. He had drunk too much, and his body went limp. It took him a while to get up.
Seeing a man standing in front of the car, the one who caused him to hit his head, he got bold and pushed the car door open to get out of the car.
While hiccupping, he said, “You… Did you see the car coming? Why did you stop in front of the car? You … wanna rip us off, right? You know what? This is Fruiter Village. It’s … my turf. You…”
Calvin staggered up to Henry. Before he could finish speaking, Henry punched him with malice on his face.
Calvin blacked out at once.
Before closing his eyes, he recognized Henry, Sonya’s ex–husband.
Sonya was taken aback and quickly got out of the car. Henry wasn’t satisfied and was about to punch Calvin again; seeing this, she stood in front of Calvin.

Henry became flustered, clutching onto her as if grasping onto a life–saving straw. “Don’t leave me behind. Take me away from here.”

She then started the car and drove past him. As she was about to turn the corner, she couldn’t help but glance at him through the rearview mirror. He was leaning back against the corner of the wall, huddled up as if he were trapped there.
When she and Calvin went back to the Sutton’s house, Dennis helped Calvin inside, while Baylee chatted with Sonya.
Baylee said, “Now that Calvin is back, stay here for a while. Then you can go back to New York together.”
Sonya nodded.“OK.”

“Calvin’s aunt slaughtered a sheep today, and I bought a lamb leg. We’ll have stewed lamb tonight.”

No matter what Baylee said, she kept nodding, but in fact, she wasn’t listening at all. The scene where Henry leaned against the wall filled her mind.
His face was ghostly pale, and he was shaking. He seemed genuinely afraid, begging her not to leave him behind…
Sonya suddenly stood up.
“Mrs. Sutton, I have something to do and need to go out,” she said and quickly ran out.
Baylee said something, but she still didn’t pay attention; all she wanted was to hurry over to Henry. What if he really needed her?
She drove to the entrance of the village and saw Henry from a distance; he was still there. Just as she was about to hurry forward, she saw Lyla.
