The scissors were her usual ones. If the killer wore gloves, only her fingerprints would be on
them.
“Dr. Ella, all the signs are pointing to you, so we need to hold you for a bit to look into it further.” Sonya bit her lip hard, saying, “I understand, but I didn’t kill her.”
“Think carefully. Was anyone at the basketball court last night who can vouch for you? “Besides the guy playing, I didn’t see anyone.”
“We’re looking for that person, but it won’t be easy.”
Sonya signed. However, she knew she was innocent.
Next, she stayed in the interrogation room, with officers questioning her one after another. She repeatedly told them what she knew, her relationship with Odette, and their conflicts.
The pain in her heart resurfaced repeatedly.
By day’s end, she was mentally and physically drained.
Without new evidence, she’d be deemed the murderer. She couldn’t bear to think about the consequences; it was too frightening.
By evening, there was progress. Someone who heard about her situation came to the police station to testify for her.
“Larissa said she saw you inside the basketball court at 8 PM on her way to her night shift. She was rushed and didn’t greet you. But this only shows you were there, not that you didn’t commit the murder. You could have killed the victim after 8 PM and then gone back to the court
Sonya thought and replied, “If I wanted an alibi, shouldn’t I have made sure that man saw me, an I saw him, and then give you his identity?”
The officer paused before continuing, “What if we can’t find him?”
Sonya went silent. If they couldn’t find him, the police might think she was lying.
“The facilities in the old city are old and many are broken, especially the intersection cameras…” The officer sighed, “We haven’t found that man or any suspects in the area’s surveillance footage.”
Sonya really didn’t know how to defend herself, even with Larissa’s statement. The suspicion remained.
That night was worse. Sonya briefly slept and then woke up suddenly. She had a bad headache, her body ached, and she was mentally on the edge.
She couldn’t grasp how she ended up in such trouble. Odette had randomly bothered her, died mysteriously in her home, and she was now a suspect.
By the third day, someone had hired a lawyer for her.
At that time, Sonya was unsure how to defend herself and seeing the lawyer surprised her.
“Cody?”
Cody nodded and smiled, “Ms. Ella, Mr. Sullivan hired me to be your lawyer. You can relax now.”
“Did he know about my situation?”

“Mr. Sullivan said he’s your only family in New York as your ex–husband and should help.” Cody gestured for Sonya to sit, and he sat too. “Let’s talk about what to do next.”
With the evidence against Sonya, her detention couldn’t be lifted yet, but some rights could be protected.
Thanks to Cody, she left the interrogation room and rested in a small room, regaining strength and having better food.
Two more days passed, and the man from the basketball court came to the police station.
With his testimony, Sonya’s suspicion was mostly cleared.
Cody took Sonya out. “Ms. Ella, my job is done. Goodbye.”
Sonya nodded. “Cody, thank you.”
“Don’t be, Ms. Ella. I work for Mr. Sullivan, so it’s my job. Besides, I guess you and Mr. Sullivan don’t need to be formal.”
Cody joked, waved, and left.
“Sonya!”
Jake, Leo, Lily, Simon, and Jasmine were waiting outside.
When she came out, they rushed over.
“Sonya, are you okay?” Lily inquired, her
eyes red.
Jasmine added, “Everything is fine now.”
Sonya smiled.
Then she saw a tall man pushing a bike from the east parking lot. She guessed he was the one who testified for her and ran over.
“Thank you, sir,” she told the man.
He was tall and slim, in a white sports outfit, with short hair and a handsome face. His eyes smiled, making him seem friendly.
He recognized Sonya immediately, shaking his head with a smile, “I was biking there that day and saw a basketball court with a ball but no players. I thought I’d play a bit before heading home. I noticed you, looking distracted, sighing and checking your phone. I didn’t realize such a big thing was happening. If I had known, I would have come to testify sooner.”
“So, how did you know?”
“Oh, someone found me and told me.”
“Who was that?”
“Mr. Sullivan? I heard someone call him that.”
Sonya sighed, figuring it was Henry.
“Still, thanks for testifying for me.”
“It’s what I should do.”
The man checked his watch, looking busy. “I need to go. Maybe we’ll meet again.”
“Okay.”

As the man left, Sonya turned and saw Cody getting into a black Maybach, which drove off to another exit.
She recognized the car; it was Henry’s.
“Sonya, let’s go grab some lunch at my place. I’ll whip something up.” Simon invitingly gestured. Sonya’s face lit up with relief as she hurried over to Simon.
“Your fried fish is the best.”
“Okay, I’ll cook it up for you.”
Jasmine had been praying. Now that Sonya was fine, she wanted to go to the church to fulfill her

“We’ll go tomorrow.”
Lily said she took time off from the film crew to be here and would rush back after lunch.
I’m okay. You should go back to work.”
Jake was busy at the tavern and wouldn’t join them for lunch at Simon’s restaurant. Leo said he was free and wanted to drink with Sonya until they were both drunk. Sonya felt lucky with these friends.
