Henry’s ‘I heard‘ obviously came from Alice. Sonya was sure she must have misunderstood something after learning about the divorce that morning.
“Sonya, we had a peaceful divorce, didn’t we?”
“Of course.”
“Then why are you spreading rumors about me?”
Sonya didn’t answer.
“First, I was trending for kidney deficiency, and I let that slide. But now, you’ve got people saying I’m infertile? What, just because we got divorced, I’m doomed to have no kids?”
“I swear; I’m just as confused as you are.”
“You better clear this up today!”
Sonya racked her brain for an explanation, but before she could figure out how to fix this mess, a faint, breathy moan came through the phone.
The sound was unmistakably… suggestive.
Sonya’s stomach churned. Was Henry seriously calling her while messing around with Lyla? Disgusted, Sonya hung up immediately.
Henry heard the call disconnect with a beep and frowned. Just then, he heard Lyla emerging from the bathroom. His expression darkened instantly.
He strode over to the doorway and found her standing in front of the mirror, struggling to remove an eyebrow piercing.
She had pierced it a while ago, but it got snagged on her clothes yesterday. She hadn’t paid it much attention, but now it was inflamed and oozing pus, sticking to the metal. Removing it was going to hurt.
“What the hell are you doing in my office?” Henry snapped.
Lyla flinched, nearly tearing the skin as her hand jerked in fear. Seeing the storm brewing on his face, she grew even more nervous.
“M–Mr. Sullivan, I–I’m sorry! I’ll leave right away.”
“Did I say you could go?”
Lyla immediately halted, lowering her head.
“Come with me to a banquet tonight. My assistant will take you shopping for a dress.”
“But my eyebrow’s swollen…”
“No one’s looking at your face.”
Lyla fell silent.
“Now, stand in front of the mirror and practice smiling. You wanted to marry me, right? Then smile like you mean it. Smile so brightly they grind their teeth in envy.”
Sonya was still seething after hanging up. Every time she thought Henry wasn’t that bad, he’d do something to remind her just how wrong she
was.
She didn’t know if he was beyond saving or if she was for ever thinking otherwise.
Just as she was simmering in frustration, Ryan, Millie, and Alice returned, each carrying a huge bag. They set them down in the courtyard and started sorting through them.
“As long as it wasn’t an emotional issue, then it’s no big deal,” Alice said.
“How is that not a big deal? If he’s got kidney issues, can’t perform, and can’t have kids, no wonder Sonya divorced him,” Auntie scoffed.
Ryan sighed. “Henry looked pretty strong. Turns out he was all show, no substance.”
“Maybe he’s just exhausted. This remedy I got from an old doctor is guaranteed to work.”
“I hope so. I actually liked Henry.”
“Mainly because he’s good at holding his liquor. I enjoyed drinking with him.”
The three of them went back and forth, not bothering to verify the rumors, already condemning Henry based on gossip alone.
Sonya stepped outside to see they had bought a lot of medicine.
They were portioned into small daily doses.
Sonya’s mouth twitched. If Henry actually drank this stuff, he might just explode.

“Not yet. They said the culprit was extremely skilled, leaving no traces behind. They’re still investigating. The clinic was processed as a crime and they’ve collected all the evidence they could, SO it’s been cleared for reopening.”

the neighbors left, Sonya spotted
Larissa walking out of the alley with her son, Milton.
“Ms. Melendez!” Sonya called out, grabbing a large bag of local specialties. “Thank you for going to the police station to testify for me.”
Larissa waved her hands. “I don’t think I helped much.”
“No, you helped a lot.”
She had confirmed Sonya’s alibi at the basketball court.
Sonya handed her the bag, insisting she take it.
Then she looked at Milton. The kid had lost weight from surgery, but he looked much better now, healthier, and more energetic.
“Milton, you’re so brave.”
“Sonya, I love the books you gave me! I’m almost finished with them.”
Back when Larissa was swamped with work, Sonya looked after Milton and introduced him to astronomy. Seeing how much he loved it, she had bought him a set of space–themed science books.
“If
you like them, I’ll get you more about the universe.”
“Thanks, Sonya! But Mom and I are moving away soon.”
Sonya turned to Larissa. “You’re leaving?”
She nodded.
“Milton’s surgery went well, and
I’ve paid off my debts. It’s time to go
home.”
“That’s good.” The city was tough for a single mother and child.
She patted Milton’s shoulder. “Give me an address, and I’ll send books to you.”
“Ms. Ella, you’re too kind.”
“It’s nothing. I really like Milton.”
He’s obedient, polite, and adorable. Sonya genuinely liked the kid.
As she watched Larissa and Milton walk away, bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun, she thought the scene was warm and beautiful.
Then, in the next second,

car suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk, speeding straight toward them.
