Chapter 63: Henry’s Accident

Turning another page, she saw a photo of Henry standing in the alleyway by Lucky’s Diner. He was wearing a white shirt, ripped jeans, his hair tousled, looking warily at the camera.
“This was taken a year after we put up the missing person posters. A stranger sent it to us, and we rushed out to find him,” Linda explained.
In the corner of the photo, a girl in a denim halter top and white shirt, with short, sharp hair, held a large cotton candy, smiling brightly at Henry.
“Who’s she?” Sonya asked.
Linda’s expression faltered, and she quickly closed the album. “Just a passerby.” Sonya had almost forgotten what Jasmine Smith looked like, but judging by Linda’s reaction, the girl in the photo was likely Jasmine Smith.
So the person who had walked alongside him, someone he couldn’t possibly have forgotten, he simply chose not to mention.
The mother–in–law and daughter–in–law looked at photo albums until midnight. If Benjamin hadn’t refused to sleep alone, Linda would have continued recounting Henry’s childhood antics.
“Ugh, I still haven’t told Sonya about Henry getting into a fight in high school and the teacher calling his parents,” Linda grumbled as she got out of bed.
“What’s there to tell? It’s embarrassing,” Benjamin called from outside the room.
“Oh, it was hilarious! His teacher was a fan of mine, and the parents of the kid he fought with were also fans! It was a serious situation that turned into a fan meet–and–greet.
Linda chuckled, walking to the door. She told Sonya to rest well, then headed to her bedroom with Benjamin, their laughter echoing through the house.
Sonya was infected by Linda’s mirth. Any slight apprehension she felt regarding Jasmine Smith dissipated instantly.
She video–called Henry, but he didn’t answer.
The next day was Saturday. Sonya had breakfast at the old house, practiced yoga with Linda, and then left.
She had lunch at Jake Parker’s small bar, celebrating Lily Lane’s first movie after her comeback.
“I have an audition tomorrow. Wish me luck!” Lily Lane raised her glass.
Sonya and Jake Parker clinked glasses, offering their good wishes.
“Director Davis recommended me. It’s a low–budget detective mystery, but the script is amazing, and my role has a lot of potential. I love it!” Lily Lane gushed.
“A detective drama? Sounds interesting,” Jake Parker said.
“Do you know who the writer is?”
“Who?”
“Rose White! The queen of detective novels!”
Sonya paused, her glass halfway to her lips.“You’re auditioning for Rose White’s project?”
Lily Lane nodded.“You know her?”

“I wouldn’t say I know her. We played Mahjong last night, and she invited me to be the on–set doctor for her show.”
“Did you agree?” Lily Lane asked quickly.
Sonya shook her head.“I said I’d consider it, but I don’t really want
to go.
She planned to renovate the old house and open a gynecology clinic. The preparations would take a while, so she wouldn’t have time for a film set.
Of course, if she had to be honest, there was another reason – Rose White gave her a strange feeling, one that made her want to avoid her.
“That’s a shame,” Lily Lane shrugged.
Sonya had an evening appointment, so she left early. Jake Parker walked her to the street, seemingly hesitant to say something.
Sonya shoved her hands in her pockets. “Is it that hard to say?” she teased.
Jake Parker awkwardly scratched his head.“I just… I didn’t expect you to marry Henry.”
Sonya understood. Their wedding had been a bit of a shock. She hadn’t explained things to them
yet.
“To be honest, I only learned who Henry really was a few days before the wedding, and that you even knew each other.”
“So you don’t really know him that well, right?”
“You could say that.”
Hearing this, Jake Parker looked worried.
“Do you know… he’s been in a car accident?”
Sonya was taken aback.“No, I didn’t.”
Jake Parker looked at her, his worry deepening.“Is it because of Julian that you impulsively married Henry?”
Sonya frowned, then said seriously, “No.”
The decision to marry Henry was impulsive, but not because of Julian Jennings.
Jake Parker didn’t believe her, muttering, Julian has a lot to answer for.*
On the subway, Sonya kept thinking about Jake Parker’s words:*Henry had been in a car accident.*
And then? Jake Parker clearly only told half the story. The other half was the harder part to say. And his worry

Sonya took out her phone, wanting to call Henry immediately. But looking at his name in her contacts, she hesitated and didn’t call.
He had a past, and she had a past.
They seemed to have an unspoken agreement: not to pry into each other’s pasts. Let the past be the past.
Sonya sighed and put her phone away.
Getting off the subway, she went to a mall, bought a toy car, and took another subway to a villa.

She called ahead, so Mrs. Ashley was waiting at the door.
‘Sonya!” Mrs. Ashley greeted her warmly.

Mrs. Ashley hugged her, then looked her over.“You’re even prettier since you got married.” “Thank you,” Sonya smiled.
Mrs. Ashley pulled her inside. “I saw you at the Sea Cloud Castle. I didn’t realize you were getting married that day. Why didn’t you tell us?”
1 figured you’d be at Julian Jennings’s wedding and would send your blessings anyway.” “It wouldn’t have been the same! If we’d known you were getting married, we’d have gone to your wedding, not his,” Mrs. Ashley huffed.
Sonya laughed. “That wouldn’t have been appropriate. After all, Alex Ge and he are business partners.
“They’re partners, yes, but I’m closer to you,” Mrs. Ashley said, holding Sonya’s hand. When Julian Jennings had a falling out with his family and started his own business, Sonya sold her old house to help him get started. They developed an app, but needed investment. Julian Jennings tried to get Mr. Alex to invest, but couldn’t even get a meeting. Sonya happened to learn that Mrs. Ashley was undergoing infertility treatment. She befriended her, learned about her condition, and took her to a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. Six months later, she became pregnant.
Because of this, Mr. and Mrs. Alex were incredibly grateful, and invested in Julian Jennings company.
As they talked, they entered the courtyard where Mr. Alex and Julian Jennings were smoking. Mr. Alex was furious. “Julian, I never thought you would betray Dr. Ella. You’re worse than Cher Shimei! Do you know what she did for you? To convince the shareholders to invest in your company, she single–handedly got those old foxes drunk, ended up in the hospital herself!
