Julian Jennings returned home to a dark house. He got a glass of water in the kitchen and gulped it down. Before, no matter how late, Sonya would come downstairs if he was home, asking if he’d eaten, if he was tired, if he needed hot water.

The empty house felt cold. He went upstairs.

Julian sat in his study. He hadn’t drunk that much, but felt intoxicated, disoriented. He craved hangover soup – Sonya’s hangover soup always had that strong herbal taste. He’d hated it then, but now he desperately wanted it.
The study door opened. Seraphina, in pajamas, flicked on the lights. Seeing him, she gasped, then a look of guilt crossed her face.
“You… when did you get back?”
The light was too bright. He shielded his eyes.“Just now.”
“Why aren’t you in the bedroom?”
“I didn’t want to wake you.”
