After a tender moment, noticing Xavier hadn’t returned, Sean said he was going outside for a smoke.
Shortly after Sean left, Xavier came back inside.
“Oh, Sean went to look for you,” Sophia said.
Xavier paused.“He went to the balcony?”
“Yeah.”
Xavier smiled awkwardly.“I just went
the restroom and probably missed him.”
Sophia paid him no mind and continued eating.
“Aunt,” Xavier started.
“Yes?” Sophia looked up.
Xavier touched his nose.“Vivian and Uncle…”
He hesitated, unable to continue.
“What about them?” Sophia asked.
“Vivian… she used to like Uncle, Xavier confessed.
Sophia already knew this; she’d overheard Luna Stone bragging about it. Even if she hadn’t, tonight’s events had made it clear.
“It’s in the past. Don’t worry about it, Aunt.”
“There’s nothing to worry about.”
There really wasn’t; Sean gave her complete security.
Relieved, Xavier said, “That’s good. You two will be working together, and I wouldn’t want you to fight over my uncle.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow.“You like Vivian!”
Xavier’s eyes widened.“Who said that?”
Sophia shrugged.“I’m teasing you.”

Seeing Sean hadn’t returned, and knowing it was cold outside and he was only wearing a shirt, Sophia got up to ask the waiter for his jacket.

Sophia pondered this, then headed toward the balkony. Through the glass door, she saw Sean leaning on the railing, smoking, and Vivian approaching, holding out his jacket. Sean sensed someone behind him, turned, and took the jacket, draping it on the railing Vivian looked embarrassed but recovered quickly, lighting a cigarette and standing beside Sean. They didn’t speak. After a while, Sean stubbed out his cigarette and turned to leave, but Vivian stopped him.
She took a piece of paper from her coat pocket and unfolded it for Sean to see. Sean’s expression immediately darkened.
Vivian said something, her eyes filled with concern.
Sean’s expression grew colder. He snatched the paper, produced a lighter, and lit it from the bottom. Vivian reached out to grab it, but Sean stepped back, glaring at her coldly.
Vivian froze, unable to approach.
Sean held the burning paper until it turned to ash.
Vivian said something else, igniting Sean’s anger. He strode forward, grabbing Vivian’s arm and pinning her against the railing
He was terrifying Vivian, usually so composed, trembled like a frightened rabbit.

Vivian, Sophia quickly opened the glass door.

Sean stiffened, stepped back, composed himself, and turned to Sophia, his usual gentle demeanor restored.

They took the subway home. Sean, in his expensive suit, looked out of place among the passengers, yet he was surprisingly chatty, engaging in conversation with a construction worker and then a university student, inspiring the latter with his words so much the student vowed to finish his thesis and take on the world er, society.
Sophia leaned against Sean, laughing until her sides hurt.
Leaving the subway, they walked home hand–in–hand.
At the crossroads, they saw the elderly woman kneeling on the ground, wailing.
