Chapter 6 

His hands trembled as they grasped something. 

His face stiffened, his breathing shallow. 

His eyes locked onto what lay beneath his fingertips- 

A piece of bone. 

Pale, eerie white. 

Fragments of tattered fabric still clung to it. 

“Why… why is there a bone here?” 

Daniel murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. 

But before he could process it, someone swung a wooden stick straight at him. 

“You bastards! Miss Reid has been dead for so long, and you still won’t let her rest in peace? Digging up 

her grave–have you no shame?!” 

Daniel reacted swiftly, grabbing the stick in midair. 

His bloodshot eyes snapped toward the attacker. 

It was the drunkard from three days ago. 

“What did you just say?” Daniel’s voice was hoarse. “This is Chloe Reid’s grave?” 

Before the drunkard could respond, Daniel shook his head frantically. 

“No. That’s impossible.” 

“People like her don’t die so easily. Chloe is a venomous woman–there’s no way she’d just die like that…” 

The drunkard studied him with a scornful smirk. 

“Oh, so you’re the heartless bastard husband? The one who betrayed her?” 

Upon confirmation, the drunkard swung his stick again, ready to chase them all away. 

“Get lost! All of you, leave!”

Chapter 6 

“You did this to her! 

“She was such a kind woman, and you all caused her such a miserable death.” 

“How dare you show your faces here?” 

Daniel’s expression remained tense, but he forced out a cold laugh. 

“Are you an actor? Did Chloe hire you for this ridiculous act? You think I can’t see through it?” 

His gaze dropped back to the exposed bones, 

Then, he stomped down, crushing them beneath his foot. 

“You like playing dead, huh?” 

“Let’s see how long these ‘props‘ can keep up the act.” 

Then, he barked a command: 

“Call the forensic team.” 

Caroline immediately panicked. 

She had to stop the forensic investigators. 

If they confirmed the remains were mine, she could easily be implicated. 

Even though she was confident–even if the truth came out, Daniel would still protect her–she still didn’t want Chloe’s death exposed. 

She would rather I remain a hated villain, despised by Daniel until the end. 

But the truth couldn’t stay buried forever. 

No matter how much she schemed, the dead couldn’t outfight the living. 

A smirk tugged at the corners of her lips. 

This was her chance. 

If Daniel confirmed my death, he would finally give up on me. 

And she could secure her place as Mrs. Emerson. 

Two hours later. 

Chapter 6 

The forensic examiner arrived. 

Dressed in a white lab coat, he let out a silent sigh before speaking. 

“Mr. Emerson… my condolences.” 

“Based on DNA testing, these remains do, in fact, belong to your wife, Chloe Reid.” 

“She died three years ago.” 

Daniel swayed on his feet. 

His face drained of color. 

His bloodshot eyes locked onto the skeletal remains. 

Beside them, patches of flesh had yet to fully decay, a putrid stench thick in the air. 

Daniel was hypersensitive to smells. 

But right now, it was as if he couldn’t smell a thing. 

“How… how did this happen?” 

“How did Chloe die?” 

The forensic examiner studied the remains carefully before answering. 

“She appears to have suffered a severe fall from a high place, resulting in multiple fractured ribs.” 

“Her body also shows signs of extensive blunt force trauma and multiple shattered bones. Additionally… her lower body…” 

The examiner hesitated. 

Glancing at Daniel, he continued in a clinical tone: 

“Before her death, she was repeatedly assaulted.” 

“Her lungs and other internal organs also contain traces of soil.” 

“There’s a 95% probability that she was buried alive.” 

With every word, Daniel’s face grew paler. 

He had been so convinced-

Chapter 6 

That I was merely hiding, refusing to donate my kidney to Caroline 

But the truth was, I had been dead all along. 

In the days that followed, Daniel became a ghost of himself. 

He wouldn’t eat. 

He wouldn’t leave his house. 

He refused to step into his company, 

He even rejected Caroline’s invitation to go shopping. 

Caroline threw herself into his arms, sobbing pitifully. 

“Daniel, I know Chloe’s death must have been devastating for you… after all, you were married for eigin 

years.” 

“But what’s done is done. There’s nothing we can do to change it, right?” 

“The best we can do is live well… and take care of Jack, don’t you think?” 

Then, she let out a delicate sigh.
