They had to create a PowerPoint presentation with the core technologies of the exhibits
they had seen that day. Given the large number of exhibits, by the time they finished and sent the work to Nolan, it was already well past 2 AM.
Johnny was exhausted, but since he didn’t have a change of clothes here, Maggie didn’t ask
him to stay over.
After Johnny left, Maggie limped to the bathroom to take a quick shower, then went to bed
to rest.
Her foot wasn’t severely injured, but Johnny had still suggested she take a few days off
before returning to work.
The next morning, Maggie woke up and stayed at home to work remotely. She didn’t go out.
Soon after, she received a call from Isabella: “Mom, is your foot feeling better now?”
Maggie gently tested her foot while making breakfast in the kitchen and replied, “It’s getting
better.”
“That’s good,” Isabella said, still eating her breakfast. After that, she didn’t know what else
to say.
Maggie could sense the change in their conversation.
It hadn’t always been like this. In the past, Isabella would have a lot to say to her.
Over the past two years, however, their communication had become less frequent.
Even when Isabella had something on her mind, she would go to Julia first. As a result, the
mother–daughter bond had naturally grown distant.
This time, when she got injured, Isabella seemed concerned, but her concern felt surface–level. She truly cared, but not deeply. If this had happened in the past, as soon as

she had the slightest injury or was sick, Isabella would have been heartbroken, crying, hugging her without letting go, and staying by her side constantly, unwilling to leave.
Back then, Isabella had truly been a caring “little cotton–padded jacket.”
But all of that had been given to Julia, unbeknownst to her.
Just like the last time when Julia fell ill, Isabella secretly messaged her to check on her while
her father, Franklin, rushed to see Julia even before finishing his breakfast. After school, Isabella immediately asked the driver to take her to see Julia.
So, if she had truly been worried about her, last night she could have insisted on finding out
where she was staying and then had the driver take her there. But she didn’t do that.
Isabella was at a loss for words, so she turned to Franklin, who was sitting across from her,
and asked, “Dad, do you want to talk to Mom on the phone?”
Upon hearing Isabella’s words, Maggie suddenly snapped back to reality.
Yesterday, when she fell, Franklin didn’t help her. When she was injured, he acted as if it
didn’t concern him at all.
His indifference could only mean one of two things: either he truly didn’t care about her, or
he was trying to avoid causing trouble with Julia. In his mind, Julia’s thoughts and feelings were clearly more important than hers.
Whether she lived or died, he didn’t care.
Otherwise, why would he have acted like that when she fell and got hurt?
Maggie’s expression turned cold as she was about to speak, but Franklin spoke first.
“Ask your mother.”
Isabella immediately turned to Maggie and asked, “Mom, Dad wants to know if you want to
talk to him on the phone.”
Maggie pressed her lips together and directly replied, “No need, Mom has something to do.”
