Chapter 19
Six months later, Nathan was gone bled out in that parking lot. Claire was serving life for first–degree murder.
Lucy and I stood outside a private adoption agency, watching through the window as a small ceremony unfolded inside.
Cooper was meeting his new parents a kind–faced couple who couldn’t stop smiling.
The little boy looked up at his new father hesitantly. “Daddy, can I have a hug?”
The man laughed warmly, scooping him up. “You can have all the hugs you want, buddy.

Cooper’s face lit up with pure joy, giggling.

“But what if?” she pressed.
I kept my eyes on the road, smiling slightly. “Then I’ll face it.”

But if he’s lucky enough to become a young man of principle and purpose, I’ll celebrate his success as genuinely as anyone else’s.

His path will be his choice.
Lucy studied my profile. “Emma, after everything, I’m glad you’re still you.”
Under the bright autumn sky, I quoted the words that had become my mantra:
“You hate someone so much… You risk becoming what you hate. No ideal in this world… Is worth losing yourself for.”
