Chapter 55
Silver how was a completely modern city, different from what I knew back home. The north was a tad more sophisticated than the east where I come from.
But nothing seemed to compare to the Blue Moon pack at the tall gates paved way for my carriage and we walked in. The two escorts assigned to me were seated at the front, while I stuck my head out to watch the city ahead of us in awe.
As I sat back inside the carriage, I thought about all Alpha Jerome said. I didn’t know the truth anymore and I wondered if coming to this contest would have been something Hasley would’ve wanted to do.
The lycan king
I didn’t know what he looked like but I just wanted to get it done with.
Our carriage came to a stop after another long ride and the door pulled open. My escort, Eddy helps me out of the carriage. The first thing I notice is the tall sky high building in front of us, followed by the women looking like maids standing neatly, waiting to welcome……us?
There’s a few other carriages that had arrived just as we did and I looked to see some ladies, all looking my age step out of it. They all looked beautiful.
“You’re all welcome to the Lycan mate contest ladies,” a man addresses us from the entrance of the building “you will all be reading here pending the time of the content. And tonight, you will all meet the lycan Alpha.”
The women came to our aids and helped walk us to our designated rooms. I looked behind and noticed there were four women participating in this contest.
Edward remained outside my room, probably guarding my door. I changed my clothes after a quick shower and stood at the window, watching the city, then I heard a soft knock on the door.
Turning towards the door, I said gently “come in.”
The door pushed open and Edward’s head pops in “um there’s a lady here to see you Hasley.” He says and steps aside.
One of the woman I recognized from earlier walks in, a big smile on her lips as she hurried inside the room and starts towards me excitedly.
“Hi! I’m so sorry to bother you but I was feeling bored so I thought I’d come say hi,” she said as she stops in front of me “my name is Veronica.”
I gave her a small smile “I’m… Hasley. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Waw your room is gorgeous.” She said as she started towards the wall, touching it admiringly.
She’s petite and looks to be a little younger than me. Her curly blond hair is held into a ponytail and her black eyes are sloe and siren.
“Are you excited for this contest?!” She asks excitedly as she Wattz her way back to me “I am. I’m so excited to meet the Lycan Alpha! I hear he’s putting up this contest because he’s a power hungry maniac who only wants a woman that can fight alongside him during wars. And I also heard he is disabled, which is why he hasn’t been mated to any woman yet?”
“Disabled? How do you
mean?”
She leans forward conspiratorially and whispers “I heard he’s in a wheelchair after a war that left him paralyzed.”
Veronica seems completely invested in this whole charade even before coming here but I’m honestly not. I just want
to get this over with and move on with the next thing on my list.

Chapter 55
Veronica stayed for a while, mostly talking before leaving me.
After a short while, a lady brought food for me and as the time dragged along after that, I felt extremely tired of being in that room for hours so I stepped out.
Id expected to see Edward by the door but he wasn’t anywhere in sight so I walked through the hallway.
There’s a total of three doors on opposite sides of each wall and as I passed them, I hear faint noises and chatters from behind the doors.
I don’t know where I’m going but I wanted to leave this building and maybe take a stroll.
Once I reached the last floor of the building, which is completely empty and silent, I noticed a dark narrow door by the right side. I look around the room but there was nobody there.
So I started towards this door as quietly as possible. I noticed the door is slightly ajar so I merely gave it a gentle push and it went open.
Before my fer, there’s a spiral metal staircase leading down below, probably to some underground room. I tried to look deeper inside but it was dark.
Taking a deep breath, I gently stepped on the stairs and carefully followed it down. As I neared the end of the floor, I saw more light in the room now.
As I leaped off the last step, I came face to face with a spacious room. From the arrangement of tall poles and shelves against th circular walls and in the middle of the room, it was obvious that this was some library or a personal study room.
The shelves are filled with books. There’s old antique laps seated on tables at one side of the room, an amber colored couch on a floor mat facing a fire place.
The room looked too neat to have been an abandoned spot
There don’t seem to be anybody here, so I might as well just spend the rest of my afternoon here before the ball Veronica told me would be happening in the evening. She said we would get to meet the lycan Alpha there before the commencement of the contest starting tomorrow.
A book tilted against the other catches my attention on one of the shelves in the middle of the room. The beautiful stylish design of the cover calls me and I pick it up. It’s a paper back designed in beautiful yellow and green rambling roses. pick it out and at the front of the book, a horse is standing on only two legs as it appears to be winning, the rider, a tall slim woman on its back, her face fierce.
“The warrior who crossed the bridge…..” I mutter the title out and opened to the first chapter.
Slowly, I started to read. Reading was my favorite thing to do growing up. And I always read in my father’s study when I was little.
Outside, the sun set and darkened the room, but time halted as I read. My obsession with mythology had begun a long time ago. I liked how twisted the stories were. Murder, and betrayal, and jealous wrath… all the worst traits were displayed in the Gods‘ behavior, and they were unapologetic about it.
It was fascinating.
The book was so engrossing, I didn’t hear the door open, or click shut, or the footsteps that approached. It was only the unnerving sense I was being watched that caught my attention. I glanced up from my book to find a pair of hungry eyes staring at me.
My lungs seemed to give me off as I dragged air through them harshly after turning around to find the tall man standing inches from me, a half frown on his lips.
Chapter 55
His thick, wavy brown hair was swept back over his high–arched eyebrows and hypnotic eyes. He was tall and trim with broad shoulders and stood with his hands hooked in his black jeans pockets, his thumbs peeking out. His posture was causal, yet it wasn’t a word I’d use to describe him. Perhaps oppressive, or invasive, or…
Sexy
I wanted to slap myself back from making this more embarrassing than it should.
“L… I’m sorry..
I didn’t mean to come down here,” I stammer as I quickly put the book back and hurried past him.
“I don’t mind you staying,” his voice forces me to a stop I sneak in here too. To have a quiet time.”
I hesitantly turn around and met his eyes again. This time, I don’t feel the fear I felt before. This time I felt calm about seeing his eyes. And I wasn’t scared, I was just enjoying watching him.
His lips twists into a small smile now, his heated gaze raking boldly downward.
“…. I was just leaving….” I told him.
“Leaving? Where else would you rather be that’s so important?” He asks, amused.
“I don’t live here,” I told him “I’m actually here because of the lycan Alpha contest. And I would be needed very soon. I didn’t know the time ran by so quickly, I was too engrossed in the book.”
I couldn’t look past his compelling eyes. And I mentally cursed myself.
“The lycan contest,” he repeats nonchalantly as he moves over to pick a book “a bit too much don’t you think? An unworthy alpha putting young women into hard work just to find himself a bride.”
I thought about his statement for a while before responding, “I think it’s his choice. If you’ll excuse me….” I turned around and started leaving.
“I’ll see you after the event?” He calls after me but I don’t reply. Because I don’t know what to say. I do not know why I was running away. I’ve never felt so attracted to someone yet so desperate to be out of his sight.
As I reached my room, I realized he hadn’t even bothered to ask of my name. What a preeq.
