Chapter 10
It was Kenneth Fabbri, who lived across from our house.
He’d lived there for over thirty years.
When I took Kenneth’s blood pressure last time, he looked like he wanted to say something but thought better of it. Maybe he was trying to tell me about the past.
I had his number.
Two minutes later, Kenneth told me a secret the Parrish family had kept from me for over twenty years.
“That villa didn’t belong to the Parrish family. It was the Ramsey family’s. Your father married into it…”
My voice trembled as I asked, “Kenneth, how much do you know about my birth mother?”
Kenneth fell silent for a moment before slowly saying, “She was a kind–hearted lady, but unfortunately, she married a scumbag…
“After her parents passed, your father started drinking and abusing her. The worst time, she was hospitalized for three months. You were born during that period…”
My father was actually a domestic abuser! He even hit my mother while she was pregnant!
The thought of him beating my mother made my heart clench in pain.

I asked my final question, “Do you know how she died?”
Kenneth replied, “When you were about six months old, your father suddenly held a funeral for her. As soon as she was buried, he brought your stepmother home. As for the cause of her death… you’ll have to find out for yourself.”
I hung up, frozen in place.
I couldn’t imagine how much my mother had suffered, pregnant and still being beaten.
She couldn’t have died a natural death. My father must have done something!
Clenching my fists, I swore to uncover the truth.
And as for the money they wanted? They wouldn’t get a single cent!
1 called Colin over. “I want to be discharged. Can you help me with the paperwork?”
He protested, “You can’t! After what they put you through, your injuries are worse! You can’t just leave the hospital like this!”
I could tell that he genuinely cared about me.
I explained, “I have something very important to deal with. I can’t let my parents find me tomorrow. I have to leave. Colin, will you help me?”
“Where will you stay then?” Colin asked.
I thought for a moment. “A hotel, I guess.”

Colin scoffed, “In your condition? They’d kick you out! If you don’t have anywhere else to go, stay at my place.”
He quickly added, “I don’t mean it like that. There’s a room for renting, and the last tenant just moved out. You can stay there. It’ll be convenient for me to change your bandages.
after work.”
That was perfect.
I accepted his offer and thanked him.
Before heading to Colin’s, I asked him to take me to the bank.
I transferred the inheritance from my mother into a more
private account.
The next morning, I was still asleep when a call from my father woke me up.
“Gracie, where are you? Why aren’t you at the hospital?”
