Most of the diary was about my mom’s feelings and thoughts during her pregnancy. She wrote that she was excited to meet
- me.
But what was on the back pages was startling.
“Gatlin seems to be cheating. I smelled another woman’s fragrance on him.”
“He drinks every day and is horrible to me.”
“He beat me today. How could he? Without my family, he would’ve been homeless.”
“He beat me again. My head hurts. I hate him.”
“I told him to get lost, and then he accused me of trying to rid of him after using him. But he’s a cheater who beats me. How did he have the nerve to say that?”
“I’ll be free when Gracie is born. I won’t give up.”
“I may not be able to see that day come.”
“Gracie was finally born. I’m thrilled. She’s the world to me!”

“I wanna sue him, get a divorce, and kick him out of my house.”

The words on the last page were written with blood.
My eyes were filled with tears.

I hired a private investigator to watch Gatlin, Kara, Leila, and Antonio all day round.
Before long, the private investigator sent me a sound recording.
Kara asked, “Do you think Grace found out the money was left for her by Siena?”
Gatlin hissed, “So what if she did? She’s my daughter. I’ll find her and make her give me the money!”

The next day, the private investigator told me that several men in black suits had gone to their place.
Only 20 minutes later, Kara called and said, “Gracie, a creditor came and is about to cut off your dad’s fingers. Come back!”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Kara responded, “I didn’t dare to tell you that your dad is addicted to gambling and owes 1,700,000 dollars! Don’t call the police. These people can do anything!”
Obviously, the show had begun.
I decided to play along.

Gatlin was explaining it to the police with a twisted face. “It’s nothing serious. No one wants money or my fingers.”
He glared at me when he saw me. “Grace! Didn’t your mom tell you not to call the police? Why did you make a false report? Explain it to the police, or you may be arrested!”
I put on an affected smile. “I did not make a false report. I called the police for Leila pushing me the other day.”
