Chapter 2
Memories flashed back.
The first time I brought Antonio home, my father ordered him to pull weeds in the backyard.
By the time Antonio was done, he was drenched in sweat, his clothes filthy. Yet my father kicked him out and forced me to stay behind.
My father told me, “Antonio is a gold digger. I won’t allow you two to be together. Find someone of equal status!”
At that point, Antonio and I had been together for three years. Of course, I refused to let him go.
Hinsisted on staying with him, and Antonio worked hard to
prove himself to my parents.
But my father remained firm.
“Why are you so stubborn? Don’t be fooled by him. He would do anything to impress you now just so he could marry you and leech off our family! Do you want to drag us all down with you?
“Can’t you just date a rich man? Why does it have to be this gold digger?”
I couldn’t believe my father would actually say something like
that.
I told him, “Dad, if you want a rich son–in–law so badly, ask

At that time, Leila was always out partying and drinking.
My father scoffed, “Your sister? Flashy and wild, no rich man would ever be interested in her.”
Those words misled me to think that my father loved me more
than her.
Who would’ve thought that just two years later, he would lock me in a basement so Leila’s wedding could go smoothly?
“They’ve slept together. What do you expect me to do?”
My father explained impatiently.
I was lost for words.
A sharp pain twisted through my abdomen, making me grit my teeth.
Looking up at my father, I said, “I’m injured. Dad, aren’t you going to take me to a hospital?”
His eyes flickered with momentary guilt, but he quickly looked away. “Just hold on a little longer. Once Leila’s wedding is over, you can go wherever you want. I won’t stop you.”
Then, he ordered the bodyguards to lock the door again.
I had seen my fair share of severe injuries and gruesome deaths on the battlefield. Yet nothing compared to the cold, crushing despair of this moment.
My father no longer felt like my father.

It was as if I were a mere stranger. Even if I bled out in this basement, he would only bother to dispose of my corpse after Leila and Antonio’s wedding was over.
