Chapter 9
I looked at them both and said with great difficulty, “Give me a day. I’ll give you an answer tomorrow.”
“Why are you dragging this out? Why does withdrawing some damn money need a whole day? Grace, you don’t want to give us the money, do you?” my mother continued to press
aggressively.
My father stopped her and then turned to me. “Fine. One day. Gracie, we are your family. Without us, you’re nothing. I hope you’ll willingly hand over the money tomorrow. We don’t want to make this ugly.”
Finally, they left.
Tcollapsed onto the floor, sighing in relief.
They didn’t act like family at all. They acted like loan sharks collecting a debt.
Colin picked me up and placed me back on the bed.
Carefully tending to my wounds, he said, “How could your parents do this? Don’t they see how badly hurt you are?”

who exactly opened my account? Was it my father?”

My mother? I immediately thought of my mother’s twisted face earlier.
But the woman Jasper described didn’t sound like her at all.
After some hesitation, I asked cautiously, “My mother… Do you mean Kara Anderson?”
That was my mother’s name.
“No, Ms. Parrish,” Jasper replied. “I mean your birth mother, Siena Ramsey. This account holds all her money. According to her will, all of it belongs to you.”
My birth mother?
Her will?
Those words sent my mind blank.
Did this mean Kara wasn’t my real mother?
Then where was my real mother? Did she pass away?
When? What did she look like?
How come my father never told me anything? Why did he claim the money was something they saved for my wedding?
Was it all just a lie to make it easier for them to take it from me?
And why wasn’t Leila given a share of this money? Was it because only she was Kara’s actual daughter?
I realized they had been lying to me about a lot of things.
But confronting them wouldn’t get me the truth.
I sat on the hospital bed for a long time, thinking. Finally, someone came into my mind.
