Chloe, seizing on the opportunity, asked urgently, “Mark, is that bitch back?”
Mark’s cold gaze swept over her.“If you can’t learn respect, go back to the clinic. Mom and Dad said if you caused more trouble, we wouldn’t protect you. You’re on your own.”
He left, avoiding her gaze, as if she were something disgusting. He ignored her pleas.
Chloe’s nails dug into her palms, breaking; her eyes were venomous. Her body trembled with rage. “Natalie Ellis, it’s all because of you!”
A week later, the design competition was bustling with people. I sat nervously in the in the contestants zone.
The host’s voice boomed, “The first prize in this year’s design competition goes to Love letter by Natalie Ellis!”
A smile touched my lips. I looked at Summer and Peter in the audience. Summer excitedly covered her mouth.“Natalie, you won!”
Peter’s gaze was fixed on me. He gave a slight smile when I received my award.
I ascended the stage. My design a stunning headdress was displayed on the large screen. A staff member in a costume of a doll presented me the trophy. As I took it, I thought I heard someone say, “Congratulations.” The noise was overwhelming; I might have misheard.
I didn’t think much of it. Looking up, I met Peter’s gaze. After the ceremony and interviews, Peter was gone.
Summer mysteriously pulled me away. I’ll take to you somewhere. It’s a surprise.”
I guessed what it was, because I’d accidentally seen a dating plan on Peter’s desk. I smiled, feeling hopeful. It was time for me to take this step. Summer walked ahead, occasionally talking on her phone. Seeing this, I felt touched.
Suddenly, a black car sped towards me.
“Natalie!”

My heart stopped; my mind went blank, a buzzing sound filling my ears. Ethan’s gaze fell on me; blood obscured his eyes. His world seemed to be consumed by red; only I was clear. He tried to smile, to reassure me, but he failed. He whispered, “Natalie, don’t cry.” It was too faint for me to hear. Seeing me run towards him with tears, he knew his life had been worthwhile.
Three years later, Ethan woke up in the hospital. Mark rushed in, his eyes welling up. He patted Ethan’s shoulder, his voice trembling with laughter, “You’re finally awake.”
Ethan smiled weakly. “You’ve aged.”
Mark swallowed the words of concern forming on his lips. On the TV, the host announced, “The wedding of the renowned designer and CEO of Caffrey Group… fireworks display…”

He looked at the wedding dress beside his bed – the one she had designed. Following the doctor’s instructions, Mark had moved many items from the studio here to stimulate his recovery. Ethan traced the fabric with his thin fingers. He found a note in familiar handwriting:“Ethan,
