Chapter 13
CARINA
I watched with wide eyes as the couple began to bicker.
“My baby, you know we can’t do that,” the guy said, massaging the bridge of his nose.
“Then, what else can we do? What kind of proof do they need to show we love each other?”
The guy sighed. “Let’s just come back next month, alright? We can try again,” he said, placing her hand on her shoulder. However, she quickly shrugged it off and glared at her lover.
“I see. That’s what you want, right? You want to postpone the wedding!” she exclaimed.
And with that, she turned around and walked away from him. The guy pursed his lips in frustration before running after
her.
“It isn’t like that!”
I felt a warm hand on my arm, so I turned to look at Falco, who appeared unbothered about the scene that had unfolded in front of us.
“Come on. Let’s go,” he said, gently dragging me toward the entrance of the building.
I weakly pointed to the arguing couple. “Did you hear that?” I asked.
He clicked his tongue. “They’re being dramatic.”
“I don’t think so,” I muttered. “Just how strict is the council with marriage?”
Falco didn’t answer and instead continued pulling me to the assigned meeting room.
As he walked, I could feel the stares and whispers of the people.
“Alpha Falco Lark of the Onyxfur pack? Isn’t he the rogue who became an Alpha?” some whispered.
“How do you even know that?” one woman asked her partner.
“He’s famous,” the man answered. “He’s strong and dangerous. He’s a renowned bachelor, too. I’m surprised to see him here.”
“Well, he is really handsome.”
“Babe! Stop looking at him.”
I pursed my lips to hide my smile. It seemed like Falco was pretty well–known in the werewolf world. Well, it wasn’t much of
a surprise. He was a young, handsome Alpha who was known for his great leadership and combat skills.
Our pack was also pretty bountiful, which made us a target for a lot of other packs.
We finally arrived in front of the meeting room, and I felt my heart race inside my chest once again.
Falco frowned, his grip tightening on my wrist, feeling my pulse. “Why is your heart beating so fast?” he asked.
“I’m nervous,” I honestly said. “Aren’t you?”
Falco shrugged. “How bad could it be?”

With that, he entered the meeting room without even warning me. I held my breath as we walked toward the singular table in the middle of the room.
The large space smelled of paper and flowers. In front of the table sat a strict–looking old woman with short, black hair and a waistcoat
She didn’t bother looking up as we sat in front of her.
“Falco Lark and Carina Vale?” she asked, still not looking at the two of us.
“Yes,” Falco answered, appearing confident.
“Hmm,” she hummed, leaning against her seat. That was when I noticed her name tag.
“Renesme, it read.
“Crap,” I whispered. Even her name sounded strict.
Finally, she looked at us. Well, at me–her eyes narrowing as if she had heard what I’d whispered.
“Well,” she started off, placing the papers down and leaning her elbows against the table while scrutinizing the two of us.
“Marriage, huh? We have some protocol questions that you need to answer before I can give you the necessary permits. How long have you been together?”
I pursed my lips before answering. “Three years.”
“Four years,” Falco said at the same time as I did.
My eyes widened as I looked at him. Renesme looked at us with raised eyebrows. Did we already fail this when it barely started?
“I courted her for one year,” Falco calmly said. “I considered that in our time together. Every moment I was with her, I wanted to cherish it. I don’t want to believe we’ve only been together for three years when it feels like we’ve known each other forever.”
I turned to Falco, searching his face for any awkwardness. However, there wasn’t any. He looked…sincere.
Renesme shrugged and asked another question. “Are you living in the same house?”
“Yes,” Falco answered.
“Same room?”
“Yes,” I answered this time.
“Hmm,” she hummed. “How did you two meet?”
“I am the pack doctors‘ daughter, and I frequent the Alpha family’s house because of my parent’s work. It was where I saw him,” I shyly said.
“And you?” she asked, turning to Falco. “Did you notice her right away?”
“I did,” he answered.
Lies.
“She was very pretty. I couldn’t describe it, but I just felt a spark the moment I laid eyes on her.”

Again, there were no lies in his eyes. It seemed like he was thinking about Natalia while talking about me, causing me to unconsciously swallow.
Renesme’s expression was unreadable as she tapped her fingers on the table.
“I see that you two are mates,” she started off. “If you have been together for four years, then I would assume you’ve known since you were 18 that you were mates.”
“I also know that you, Falco Lark, are the esteemed Alpha of the Onyxfur pack. You have been written to by the council regarding the lack of Luna in your pack for the past two years. However, you’ve never responded to our letters.”
“You have a vast history of attacks for the past months, and your pack is on the verge of dissolving. In fact, it says here that your pack is bound to be absorbed by the Gold Orb Pack if you don’t have a Luna by the end of next month.”
“Why is it that you only decided to get married now?” she asked with a small smirk, placing her hands under her chin.
“We were young,” Falco said. “We weren’t ready for it back then–marriage, that is. We need to be married in order for Carina to become my Luna. However, we were still far too young. We still are.”
“I am not new to this game, Alpha Falco,” Renesme said. “There are plenty of packs around the world, and this case is
common.”
“Frankly, based on your answers, I do not buy it,” she continued with narrowed eyes.
“I shall not grant you the permits for the time being.”
