Chapter 29

Chapter 29

ALEX

I never thought I would cry at a wedding. But, there I was, blinking back tears as I watched Kina and Falco sitting together in front of the altar

They looked perfect together! It was baffling how Alpha Falco only noticed her now. In my opinion, they were a match made

in heaven

Rina looked breathtaking, while Alpha Falco appeared more handsome than ever. However, it wasn’t those aspects that made me cry

It was the way they looked at each other. I couldn’t tell if it was love, maybe not yet, but it still looked beautiful

Just then, Carter clicked his tongue, snapping me back to reality

What are you crying for?he asked, still chewing on the steak they had just served

I glanced at him. It’s a wedding,I said, wiping a stray tear with the back of my hand. I’m happy, of course. Besides, they look so good together.”

I gestured to the two of them, and like perfect timing, Rina laughed out loud. Meanwhile, Alpha Falco had a small smile playing on his lips, making him appear younger

I want them to be together for a long time,I muttered

Carter raised an eyebrow, his lips quirking into a grin. Didn’t know you were this sappy. You actually like romance?

What? I like romance,I shot back defensively

He chuckled, shaking his head. It doesn’t look like it.”

Why not?I asked, crossing my arms in front of his chest

He smirked, leaning back in his chair. Can you even get married?”

The question was casual and teasing, but it hit me harder than it should have. I forced a laugh. Hey, even if I’m like this, I still have my own fantasy, okay?”

Sure, sure,he said, still smirking. The guy you’re going to marry is going to be one lucky bastard,” he added, causing my eyebrows to raise in surprise

“He’d always feel protected!he exclaimed, nudging my shoulder

I clicked my tongue and looked away. And here I thought he would say something unrelated to my strength and occupation as a guard for once

Then, out of nowhere, he looked at me, his expression softening. But you look pretty nice today. I’ll give you that. The dress suits you well.”

I blinked at him, surprised. Compliments from Carter weren’t exactly common. The only ever time he complimented me was back when we were in high school

He had ruined my favorite pencil case and made one for me out of wood the next day. He told me I suited it because I was pretty like a tree. Although, now that I think about it, trees weren’t exactly conventionally pretty, were they

I was about to smile, but he had to speak again

You look less like a man.”

Ah, of course. This compliment has to have a catch, too

So stupid, really,I muttered, shaking my head. No wonder I hate you.”

I hate you too,he jokingly said, even pinching my cheek in the process

I pursed my lips and looked away

But as much as I hated his words, I hated myself more for liking him. What kind of idiot gets flustered over a guy who can’t seem to go five minutes without saying something annoying? He doesn’t even see me as a woman

My gaze wandered back to Rina and Falco, Carter’s wasn’t even trying to hide it

  1. I noticed how his eyes softened when they landed on Rina. He

Well, he might actually be doing a good job at hiding his feelings since Rina has no clueor maybe even Falco

Maybe it was just me who noticed

I shook my head again, letting out a bitter laugh under my breath

I couldn’t even blame him. Who wouldn’t like Rina? She was kind, smart, and beautiful. She deserved the kind of admiration Carter gave her. The people in the pack were just too stupid to notice it

This is so complicated,I muttered

What is?Carter asked, leaning closer to me. The action sent butterflies to my stomach, so I looked quickly away

Nothing,I muttered

Why did my feelings for him have to resurface now, of all times

Oh, look,” he suddenly said. It’s the bouquet toss. You should try it out,he jokingly chimed

However, I stood. Yeah, I should,I said, making him surprised

Good luck,he called out as I walked to the altar

Carina stood on the small stage, a soft smile on her face as she turned her back to the crowd

The bouquet sailed through the air. Before I even realized it, my hands shot up on instinct, and I caught it

Dang, those training for my reflexes were a big help

There was silence for a while before the crowd erupted into cheers and laughter

My face burned as I held the bouquet awkwardly, unsure of what to do with it

Carter shook his head, a teasing grin spreading across his face as I walked back to our table. You don’t suit it,he said. The flowers.”

I laughed, softly tossing it on the table. Yeah, I don’t.”

I’m more fit for the battlefield, huh?”

He laughed along, not catching the sadness in my voice

But as I looked down at the bouquet on the table, a lump formed in my throat. The truth was, I didn’t want to be just fit for

the battlefield. I didn’t want to always be the tough one, the reliable one, the one no one looked at twice

You are.Carter said, wrapping one arm around me. That’s why we’re the greatest of friends!”

I chuckled along with him

Friends, my ass. I don’t consider you as one.”

He shook his head in amusement and went back to his meal

I may have said those words jokingly, but in reality, I meant every line
