Chapter 6
CARINA
I had braced myself for rejection.
The way he said those words definitely implied that I wasn’t good enough for him.
Well, Falco had every reason to tell me I wasn’t fit for him. I mean, he already did it when he found out we were mates. At first, I was in denial.

However, I realized he wanted someone to match his strength, his status, and his ridiculous good looks. He wanted someone capable of leading the pack with him.
Yet, I believed I could take care of him well. It was what I have been doing since Natalia left the pack! But then again, he never looked at me that way, even in her absence.
So, I was sure he would disagree. It wasn’t me.
However, to my surprise, a slow smirk curved his lips.
“You’d want it to be you, hmm?” he suddenly teased, his voice filled with dangerous amusement.
I blinked. The question caught me off guard, but it wasn’t just his words.
It was the way he asked like he already knew the answer and was daring me to say it.
Before I could gather my thoughts, he tilted his head slightly, his eyes locked on mine.
“Would you like that, Carina?”
Having him say my full name sent a jolt through me, and I involuntarily took a step back. My heart raced inside my chest, and I was afraid he could hear it.
He didn’t move to close the distance right away, thank goodness.
Yet, I was unsure if that was actually better than what he was doing.
He watched me like a wolf watching its prey, his smirk widening as he caught the reaction I was trying so hard to hide.
“I…” I started, but the words failed me.
That was when he stepped forward. Slowly.
I stepped back, too, and although his room was big–probably the biggest in the entire village, my back soon touched the cold wall, a sharp contrast to my hot skin.
He followed after me, not giving me any chance to escape.
He was shirtless, his bare chest damp with sweat from his aggressive punching session.
I could smell his scent more intensely this time. Being wolfless, I still had weak senses. It was only when he was this close that I could feel myself suffocating from his scent.
I watched his face and wondered if that was the case for him, too. Did I have an effect on him like he did on me? I turned my head to the side, finding it hard to breathe.
However, even then, he didn’t want me to escape his gaze. He placed his finger on my cheek and softly led me to face him.

“Answer me, Rina,” he said, his voice low and teasing.
My throat went dry. The way he looked at me, the way his words had such an effect on me it wasn’t fair.
He may not know exactly what he was doing. For all I know, he really was just teasing me for the heck of it, and yet I couldn’t stop myself from feeling the pull of it.
I held my ground, refusing to look away even as heat crawled up my neck. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
His smirk turned into a grin, but he didn’t answer. Instead, he closed the remaining distance between us.
“Carina,” he said softly, his voice a low rumble that sent shivers down my spine.
My heart was pounding so hard I was sure he could hear it now. When he leaned in, I froze, my body betraying me as I stood there, rooted to the spot.
His face was so close now that I could feel the warmth of his breath against my skin. My eyes fluttered shut, every nerve in my body on edge.
“You smell good,” he murmured.

The words were unexpected and disarming, and for a second, I thought I might melt. But then he spoke again, and the floor dropped out from beneath me.
“Like Natalia.”
My eyes snapped open.
That name again.
“Oh,” I managed, my voice coming out smaller than I intended.
Falco pulled back slightly, his smirk back in place. “I’m just messing with you. I just miss her. You smell good on your own. Did you change your perfume?”
I pursed my lips and nodded, walking to the side. I wasn’t even wearing any!
I turned to him but quickly looked away. There was something in his eyes that I couldn’t quite place. However, it disappeared as quickly as it came.
He straightened, running a hand through his dark hair before wiping the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand.
“Nice to know,” I muttered, trying to keep my voice calm despite the embarrassment that stirred in my chest.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Falco seemed strangely at ease, as though teasing me had somehow lightened whatever burden he was carrying. He leaned casually against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched me.
I forced myself to look away, my gaze darting to the floor. The silence was unbearable, but I didn’t know what to say.
Should I be angry? Flattered? Frustrated? I didn’t even know what I felt, let alone how to put it into words.
The sound of footsteps approaching broke the tension. Both of us turned toward the source, and a moment later, Timothy appeared in the doorway.
“Alpha,” he said, addressing Falco but sparing me a quick nod of acknowledgment. In fact, his eyes lingered a bit longer on my red face, and a small smile made its way to his lips. I was too embarrassed at his reaction, so I looked away after a brief greeting.
